The 25th anniversary of Vietnam - Ireland diplomatic relations and the 15th anniversary of Quang Tri - Ireland cooperation in Quang Tri province

On March 11, 2021, Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee presided over and coordinated with the Embassy of Ireland to organize the Meeting to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Vietnam and Ireland diplomatic relations (April 5, 1996 - April 5, 2021) and 15 year of Quang Tri - Ireland cooperation.
Attending the Meeting, ​​there were Ms. Elisa Cavacece, Deputy Head of Misson, Head of Development, Embassy of Ireland in Vietnam, Mr. Dao Manh Hung, Member of Standing Committee of Provincial Party, Chairman of Provincial Fatherland Front; Mr. Hoang Nam, PPC Vice Chairman; leaders of Department of Foreign Affairs; partners and alumni.

The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on April 5, 1996. The year 2021 marks 25 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam - Ireland and 15 years of cooperation between Quang Tri - Ireland. Since its embassy establishment in Hanoi in 2005, Irish Government has soon supported the implementation of humanitarian programs in the fields of disaster recovery, education, mine clearance, UXO survivor assistance. Most recently, the Irish Government has timely assisted Quang Tri in responding to Covid-19 pandemic effectively and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters. Ireland has been contributing to people's lives improvement, and local socio-economic development. The total funding for these sectors reached 2.29 million Euro.
Since 2012, the Irish Government has sponsored communes with special difficulties under Program 135 with a non-refundable aid of 52.04 billion VND. President Michael Daniel Higgins came to Quang Tri province during his state visit to Vietnam in November 2016. On November 10, 2016, Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee met with Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Charles Flanagan and signed a memorandum of understanding, in which the two sides agreed to continue strengthening and deepening cooperation in the fields of capacity building, experiences sharing and development in the coming time.
Speaking at the Meeting, Vice Chairman Hoang Nam emphasized that Vietnam and Ireland both had great potentials and opportunities for cooperation in economy, trade, tourism, investment, culture and education. The cooperation programs have increasingly brought about practical, specific and consistent with common interests of the two countries and people. In particular, after the state visit of Irish President Michael D. Higgins and his wife to Vietnam in November 2016, the Vietnam-Ireland partnership has been raised to a new height. At the same time, he stated that the 15-year journey was not too long for a relationship but extremely meaningful when it witnessed the continuos growth of the friendship between Quang Tri and Irish partners. Vice Chairman Nam believed that the events in Quang Tri would promote friendship and cooperation between the two countries Vietnam - Ireland in general and Quang Tri - Ireland in particular.
On behalf of the Embassy of Ireland in Vietnam, Deputy Head of Mission Elisa Cavacece expressed her delight in the socio-economic development as well as the achievements in poverty reduction in Quang Tri province. At the same time, she appreciated the effort and success of the government and people of Quang Tri in controlling the Covid-19 epidemic as well as minimizing damages caused by the historic flood in October 2020. Ms. Elisa Cavacece thanked the People's Committee, Department of Foreign Affairs and related partners for organizing meaningful Meeting and their contributions in building and nurturing cooperation with Ireland during the last 15 years.

In the framework of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Vietnam and Ireland diplomatic relations, the 15 years of Quang Tri - Ireland cooperation and Ireland National Day on March 17, Embassy of Ireland in Vietnam cooperated with Quang Tri PPC to hold Greening Ceremony at the Provincial Cultural and Cinema Center at 6:30 p.m on March 11, 2021. Since 2010, the initiative of greening has become a global campaign in which famous landmarks around the world have been "dyed green" to celebrate Ireland's National Day. Hanoi was the first city in Southeast Asia to join the campaign and Ly Thai To Flower Garden was the 100th landmark in the world to go green. Quang Tri is the only location in Vietnam to join the Campaign in 2021. This important event is an opportunity for everyone to have better understanding about the culture, people, country of Ireland and Vietnam, which promotes the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam - Ireland in general and Quang Tri - Ireland in particular. It will convey the values of peace, friendship and cooperation to humanity.
